Josiahs Reformation

History  by
Richard Sibbes

For Richard Sibbes, it is more to the world than what is visible. He has always been inclined towards seeking out all that is hidden in the heart of his listener’s behaviors. He was convinced that sin stems from inner desires residing and growing in the heart, and without reaching and pulling these desires from the roots, altering the person’s behavior will result in hypocrisy and can manifest the cold and self-righteous cloak for a heart that is dark deep within. Published first in 1629, this book is as relevant today because Sibbes believed in turning the hearts of people. A narrative that needs to be reintroduced today as our busy lives degenerate into hypocrisy where we keep the outward routine and appearance of holiness without having the heart for it. Sibbes believed in a world where Christians enjoyed Christ first, before using him as a package to pass on.

Gleanings from the Book of Life

Daily Devotional  by
Henry Law

It is not a new conviction to Henry Law when he writes on the large spaces the Church and its affairs occupy in the minds, thoughts, writings and discourses, noting that the attention to ‘semblance of religion’ has never been the failure of the present day. As rank weeds; luxury, pleasure, pride and selfishness prevails in many forms; it overruns the civilization and they are not invested in stimulating the interest of the masses in spirituality and its concerns. In admits of all ambiguity, he states that zeal for all forms of devotion holds its ground, withstanding the blasts of infidelity and superstition. Henry Law concludes his work by curating multiple messages from scattered passages to highlight the truth that pervades the sacred volume, the truth that amid exertion in the name of religion, the remedy of sin is always neglected and sorrowful men spend their energies in sowing chaff.

Church Discipline

Daily Devotional  by
John Owen

Church Discipline is a scholarly devotional written by John Owen, one of the greatest European Reformed theologians and the leading church figure for the English Puritan movement. In today’s congregations, discipline is amiss. A majority of conservative leaders think that a church cannot be Biblical unless it practices sound church discipline. The motivation is the restoration of the sinner, and when it fails, the church’s protection is required.

Owen calls the church in Biblical knowledge, using comprehensive annotation and intellectual authority. From the acceptance of new members into its society, governance, and tutelage of those who are entrusted to it, and exclusion from its community of those who refuse to live and walk according to its norms and standards, Owen beckons leaders of His light to duly recognize that authority can be utilized for the betterment of the church.

Biblical Elders and Deacons

Daily Devotional  by
Nehemiah Coxe

Christ’s will as revealed in Scripture is the pattern for the church, and Nehemiah Coxe unfolds aspects of that pattern that relate to church leadership. “The edification and beauty of the Church is much concerned in her order, not such an order as superstition will dictate, or litigious nicety contend for, but such as sets her in a conformity with Christ’s will; and particularly the filling up of the offices which He has appointed, with persons duly qualified for the administration of them, and the regular acting both of officers and members in their respective positions.”

Only Way to Victory

Daily Devotional  by
Samuel Chadwick

The Church is the creation of the Holy Spirit. It is a community of believers who owe their religious life from the first to the last to the Spirit. Apart from Him, there can be neither Christian nor Church. The Christian religion not institutional but experimental. It is not an ordained class, neither is it in ordinances and sacraments. It is not a fellowship of common interest in culture, virtue, or service.

Establishing Grace

Daily Devotional  by
A.M. Hills

Grace is God’s ultimate gift to human beings. This statement has been well-explained by the book Establishing Grace by A.M. Hills. It examines the entire sin issue in the context of New Testament dispensation and reveals from the scriptures that the atoning work of Jesus Christ must forever have as its objective, the deliverance from all sin and the infilling and indwelling of the ever-present comforter, the Holy Spirit. The book allows readers to better understand Paul’s letter to the Romans. It highlighted that sins are forgiven not because of human merit but only of God’s grace. It explains that one will experience grace if there is absolute consecration to God. Hills’ calls for repentance have been manifested in this book to exhibit the benefits of the gospel plan of salvation.

Christians Armour

Daily Devotional  by
Arthur W. Pink

Considered by many to be the most influential Puritan today, Pink’s writings have the depth that rivals Puritans, making his work relevant in this century that postdates the Puritan era by several centuries. The deep research is evident in this brief exposition of Ephesians 6:10-18 as it deals with the practicality of faith through a kaleidoscope of helpful observations and dealing with aspects of sanctification. With doctrines in the front ranks of Christian writing, Pink encourages his disciples to seek to walk by the Lord as close as they can; turning from sin and all that is wicked in the spiritual light. The books aim to help Christians in developing a disciplined mind to live for God. He further states that to be strong in grace, one must be weak in sin and that we should be merciless when dealing with corruption. Prayer becomes the armor when we are diligent.

Night Scenes in the Bible

Daily Devotional  by
Daniel March

“Jacob wrestling with the angel, the passage of Israelites on the sea, the Magi tracking down the Messiah through the brightest star in the sky, Peter walked on waters, the last supper, Jesus weeping at the garden of Gethsemane, Paul’s escape from prison—aside from being dramatic scenes in the Bible filled with miracles, what do these scenes have in common?
In this book, we can see that most of the dramatic scenes in the Bible happened at night. The writing style of Daniel March is exquisite that reading his work is like visiting the Holy Land, being transported to the scenes in the Bible, and meeting its characters.
Jesus is the light of the world, and we are His adopted siblings. Just as the stars in the sky are brightest during the deepest night, so is our faith magnified during the darkest hours. So as children of light, we should not fear the darkness but shine even brightly as miracles unfold.
