Prayer

Practical Teaching on Prayer by
John Calvin

Consistent, sensitive and profound, John Calvin sees Prayer through the lens of social and psychological constants and variables. Not indulging sentimentality, the book is an intimate conversation of the pious as prayer can be described as a means to meet God himself through experience. In the most comprehensive writing on Prayer to be found, John expresses prayer as a chief exercise in faith and that it is more than a verbal declaration or promises by God. Prayer as a notion of a promise lies at the heart of Calvin’s view on prayer and it is in this orientation that Calvin’s theology reaches its full potential. The book speaks about the zeal to serve God, gratefulness, spiritual alertness, finding delight in prayer and God’s generosity that authenticates the efficacy of prayers. John concludes that praying amidst dreadful circumstances refreshes God’s love even though that may not seem apparent in those situations.

The Lords Prayer/a>

Practical teaching on prayer by
Thomas Watson

One of the most popular preachers in London in the Puritan era and famous puritan preachers in history, Thomas Watson is a prodigious writer who addresses a wide range of subjects including All Things for Good that was originally published by A Divine Cordial, practical divinity, Ten Commandments. A nonconformist, Thomas’s writings are clear, rich and relatable today as they were during the 17th century. The Lord’s Prayer is a three-volume edition that is outstandingly helpful and can be said to be an ideal guide to Christian doctrine, analyzing the preface of prayer and six petitions in detail notwithstanding vigorous dissents. Illuminating and stirring, divine and practical, devotional and beautiful, theologically rich and pastorally sensitive, this book is a great introduction to Puritan literature and it provides practical help as it focuses on biblical instructions. It is a lengthy read but it is metamorphic gold mine of wisdom and insights.

Short and Easy Method of Prayer

Practical Teaching on Prayer by
Madame Guyon

How should we pray? Should we sit, stand, or fall to our knees with our eyes close? Is there such thing as the proper way to pray?
Madame Guyon’s prayer styles disturbed the conventional church of her time. After she wrote this book, she was imprisoned for seven years. But after her death in 1717, it was published worldwide. This work reminds us to be quiet and take our time with God, letting His word penetrate our hearts as we patiently wait on Him. This prayer style is known today as contemplative prayer—a kind of prayer that chooses no time and place to pray but advocates for being in a state of constant prayer throughout the day.
This work can be read quickly, but it would be much better to savor it little by little as we discover how to rest in His presence all the days of our lives.

A call to Prayer Part 1

Practical teaching on prayer by
J.C. Ryle

A Call to Prayer, written by Anglican bishop John Charles Ryle, is a bold, encouraging, and compassionate invitation to all God’s children to come before Him in prayer. It is a direct admonition to pray sincerely and incessantly. In this part, Ryle explains that one of the most important challenges confronting our country and the world is the crisis of fatherhood. Indeed, if the world is to be saved, the Church must be revitalized. If the macro-Church is to be revitalized, the micro-Church of the family must be revitalized as well. And, if the family is to be healed and revitalized, the man who is both husband and father must become the man God made him be – a father on earth like the Father in heaven. Ryle was recognized for his warm, straightforward candor, the kind that appeals to all souls and A Call to Prayer is no exception.

A Call to Prayer

Prayer by
J.C. Ryle

A Call to Prayer is a bold, encouraging, and compassionate invitation to all God’s children to come before Him in prayer. It is a direct admonition to pray sincerely and incessantly.

Private prayer, according to Ryle, is the most neglected of all Christian responsibilities. It is regrettable because private prayer is the genuine measure of a Christian’s walk with God, as well as “the pith and marrow of practical Christianity.” To encourage his readers to practice and enjoy the luxury of private prayer, Ryle highlights both the benefits of prayer and the severe risks of prayerlessness.

A Call to Prayer highlights that prayer, with God’s blessing, gives birth to new life, develops faith, moves mountains, and fosters spiritual growth and contentment that transcends circumstances. His admonition is undoubtedly timely for our contemporary evangelical church, which has been a testimony to a lost and perishing world in the last generation.

Each prayer is accompanied by in-depth instruction to help one better comprehend the purpose and effectiveness of Paul’s words today. It also allows readers to learn about Paul’s extraordinary life, including how prayer made the unthinkable possible and the inconceivable a reality.

Prayer Avails Much

Practical teaching on prayer  by
T.M. Anderson

An evangelist and a college professor associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Church of Nazarene, Tony Marshall Anderson is convinced that the people of faith have not discovered the full potential and infinite possibilities of praying. The message in his book is addressing this very issue and hence, it is written to stimulate and catalyze the interest of the masses in praying without ceasing. Anderson concludes that Christ is our hope of deliverance in a frenzy world lined with obstacles, he further elaborates by stating the directly proportional relationship between praying, faith and victory that comes with unwavering faith and that we all hope for in the light of God’s unfailing promises. When delivering his message, Anderson also remains humble as he considers it impossible for an individual to present a complete study on the vast subject of prayer; it would be like measuring eternity by a span.
