Exegeting Galatians

Doctrine  by
Ariel Ben-Lyman Hanaviy

In the book of Galatians, Paul had used many technical words and phrases in the Hebrew language. Unfortunately, these words had a tendency to be greatly misinterpreted if taken out of the 1st century Judaic context. As a result, some interpreters teach concepts that were almost the opposite of their original purpose.
HaNaviy is a Jew who teaches Torah from a Messianic perspective. He doesn’t claim to uncover the whole truth in the book of Galatians. But he is challenging us to take a scientific approach to understand how the believers in Galatia would have taken up the message of Paul. By doing so, we stand a better chance of understanding Paul’s puzzling instructions. Because without the proper background, we will misread the Apostles to the Gentiles. So let’s read Exegeting Galatians and see this epistle with fresh eyes.

Shorter Comentary on Galations

Doctrine  by
Don Garlington

Historically, the book of Galatians has been widely misunderstood, due largely to the technical discussions of biblical topics ranging from circumcision to the Torah, to freedom in Christ. A contextual study of Galatians will help to unravel the letter for both Christians and Jews. Associating Pharisaism with Moses, the phrase“works of law”(especially in Galatians)is quite misunderstood in mainstream Christianity—particularly consider in the Protestant belief that the Law has been somehow null if led by Jesus’ sacrifice. According to such skewed theology, on one side of the fence is Moses and the Torah—the Pharisees, represent at lives of that “Old Testament religion.” On the other side is Jesus, Paul and grace.

The Bible and Archaeology

Reference by
Unknown

This book is a brief, popular (but informed and up-to-date) introduction to the relationship between the Bible and archaeology. Material culture (i.e., artifacts) and the biblical text illuminate each other in various ways, but many of us find it difficult to reach a nuanced understanding of how this process works and how archaeological discoveries should be interpreted. This book provides an ironic and balanced perspective on these issues, showing how texts and artifacts are in a fascinating “dialogue” with one another that sheds light on the meaning and importance of both. What emerges is a rich and complex picture that enlivens our understanding of the Bible’s message increases our appreciation for the historical and cultural contexts in which it was written and helps us be realistic about the limits of our knowledge.

The Trinity

Doctrine  by
David C. Pack

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit—is God three persons in one being, or is God a family? How about the claim of other sects that acknowledges only the Father as God and not the Son and the Holy Spirit? Which of these beliefs should we believe in?
“”Who and What is God?”” This question confused man for millennia, yet many have not found peace with the answer they received. Moreover, this confusion expanded as new and different brands of Christianity were organized. But what is the truth about the character of God?
In this book, Pack emphasized that the knowledge of all the doctrines of the Bible is nonsense without the knowledge of God’s identity. He stressed that the nature of God is only revealed to those who have a relationship with Him, and worshipping the true God is a way to know Him personally. So let’s dig into this book and understand His nature.

Mortification of Sin

Christian Living by
John Owen

One of the top Puritan books on holiness, this classic Christian literature by John Owen urges its readers to fight against the uninviting and ever-lasting tendencies that pull us into the cycle of sins, these tendencies and attitudes remain a part of a man even when he is devoted and brought to faith. He propagated the belief in power in God’s word. To win this eternal fight against sin, John emphasizes the guidance that can be extracted from faith in Christ and the Spirit, rather than relying on the individual strength. He presents his case by stating the liabilities attached with human strength such as self – righteousness, anxiety and superstition, the roles the conscious can play. Mortification of sin is a practical book with legit research backing it up as John was an experienced academic administrator –the solutions offered are relevant in modern times where we are surrounded by temptations.

Greatest Fight in the world

Christian Living  by
Charles Spurgeon

The Greatest Fight in the world is a smaller but notable work by Spurgeon. The book is demonstrating Spirit and Faith by starting a much-needed conversation on the fight for faith. Spurgeon examines three vital aspects: the first part focuses on the word of God serving as the inspiration of the fight – this is called the armory, the second part investigates the institution of Church and its role in command – titled as the armory and final part called strength, which determines how we wear the armor and utilize its power that can be the metamorphic sword. Spurgeon presented this message with force and conviction in his final address at his Pastor’s college in 1981 yet it is received with enthusiasm even today. Spurgeon preaches the invincibility of a believer that comes with diligence in the prayer routine. He concludes prayer as being the ultimate language to learn the truth.

Golden Alphabet

Hermeneutics  by
Charles H.Spurgeon

The Bible, written in the Hebrew language, has used around 8,000 words only. But despite its limited number of words, it is a rich language because of its variations and combinations of meaning. At first glance, Psalm 119 may look redundant, but the author used those limited words in fresh ways that exhibit another shade of meaning. For example, in one verse, the psalmist is bearing witness; in the next verse, he is praising; and in the third verse, he is praying. This commentary about Psalm 119 is not published initially as one book but a part of a book. But since only huge libraries can hold such a series of thick volumes, small parts were printed separately to find their way to the hands of simple readers. It is the ardent hope of the author that this book may help fan the flames in our hearts to worship God.
