Europe will change this year.

February 4, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

Donald Trump the 45th president of the United States does not offer Europe choices or loopholes. He simply turns the page and announces a new world order where America is first, strong, secure, prosperous and proud.  Nato is obsolete and America is no longer paying for Europe’s defense.

Europe is advised. Donald Trump means it. It will force Europe to wake up from its quiet life reorganize and come to grips with new rules, new treaties and new problems. The new presidency comes at the worst time with elections in France and Germany, Netherlands scheduled this year. The Brexit decision appears to be finalized when it passed overwhelmingly in parliament.

However, there are other long-standing problems that have resurfaced. France’s far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen called on voters across Europe to “wake up” and follow the example of US and British voters. “2016 was the year the Anglo-Saxon world woke up. I am certain 2017 will be the year when the people of continental Europe wake up.”

Grexit was coined long before Brexit.  European creditors need to approve the second round of Greece’s bailout. The money is critical for Athens to repay $6 billion due in July. Senior EU officials said there has not been enough progress for the finance ministers to approve a deal. The government has been sent back to the drawing board to find new spending cuts and revenue. Greece has been facing a deep economic crisis for nearly a decade now, with public debt more than tripling compared to the prior crisis figures. In January, a confidential report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is one of the main creditors for Athens, said that the country is likely to face an “explosive” surge in public debt with only significant debt relief capable of easing the situation. There is small hope that an agreement can be reached by February 20th before the next Euro group meeting. Officials in Athens are not optimistic. There is resistance against any further austerity. The calls to dump the Euro and return to the Drachma are getting louder.

Britains Prime Minister May has pledged to invoke the so-called Article 50 that kicks off the Brexit process in March. Once Article 50 is triggered, there is no turning back. So analysts expect more volatility in stocks and currencies.

Also in March, the Dutch head to the polls for elections. Prime Minister Mark Rutte is coming under pressure after his Justice minister resigned. The populace leader of the far-right Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, holds strong anti-immigrant and anti-E.U.  views. This has made him a strong candidate in the upcoming election.  His victory could put the Netherlands on a path to leave the Eurozone. Analysts, however, expect a more mainstream party to form a coalition without him…..but that is what they predicted for the American elections.

In April or May, the French also go to the polls. Given the scandal surrounding the French president, the Nationalist Front Marine Le Pen has made gains in the polls. She is hoping for a similar political shakeup in France and an end to the country’s membership of the Eurozone. This would be a fatal blow to the shared currency project. Le Pen has taken the lead in several polls but isn’t expected to win the election.

Italy isn’t slated to hold another election until 2018. But analysts have started to brace for a June ballot because the country’s court last week struck down the 2015 election law passed by the former Prime Minister Renzi.  That would add to an already unstable landscape in Italy after Renzi stepped down in December following the referendum defeat on a constitutional reform plan. Of all the major EU members,  Italy poses the most significant political risk in 2017. Italy no longer has a center-right alternative to the current governing party that makes the country more vulnerable. The populist five-star movement has gained popularity and a win for them would be feared to put Italy on the path out of the Eurozone.

The stable heavyweight of the European economy is Germany. They are headed to the polls on September 24. Analysts are speculating that Angela Merkel could hold on to the leadership despite her popularity being marred by terrorist attacks,  immigration issues, and rising inflation. Germany’s social Democrats have chosen Mark Shultz, the popular ex-president of the E.U. to stand against Merkel. He has promised to make the election exciting and focus on the hard working people.

I expect new leadership in Europe. Nationalism, trade war and U.S. isolation will not be economically beneficial to our trading partners. These conditions will mirror the 1930’s and they gave us Franco, Tito, Tojo, Mussolini, Stalin, and Hitler.  It was Europe that dragged the world into war…Twice. Third time is a charm.

The Deeper Christian Life – Andrew Murray Audio Book

January 25, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

THE DEEPER CHRISTIAN LIFE  AN AID TO ITS ATTAINMENT – by  ANDREW MURRAY

If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would you be convicted? Christians have asked themselves this question, or ones like it, for millennia.

In his book, The Deeper Christian Life, Andrew Murray helps us come to grips with those nagging insecurities in our Christian walk.

A shallow relationship with God leads us down a road of doubt and insecurities

Can I be forgiven? How can I forgive?

Murray tells us that we can go deeper in our relationship with God, and with that deeper relationship comes growing confidence and joy in the gospel. That joy springs from the knowledge of God’s grace in forgiving us and enables us to extend that grace to others in our lives.

Mortification of Sin by John Owen Audio Book

January 25, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

MORTIFICATION OF SIN by JOHN OWEN

I. The Character of Mortification
1. God commands all believers to mortify the deeds of the body through the Spirit.
2. He accompanies this command with the promise of abundant life.
3. Mortification involves the habitual weakening of, and contention against, sin.

II. The Need for Mortification
1. We need to mortify besetting sin daily
2. The Holy Spirit alone performs this work in believers
3. Mortification is not possible for unregenerate men or for disobedient believers.

III. The Preparation for Mortification
1. Nine considerations aid believers in preparing for the mortification of sin.
2. Believers should realize the guilt, danger, and evil of sin.
3. We should also meditate on God’s perfection in contrast to our sinfulness.

IV. The Practice of Mortification
1. The work of mortification actually involves only two things.
a. First, we must trust in Christ’s sufficiency.
b. Second, we must seek the Holy Spirit who alone mortifies sin

Words to Winners of Souls by Bonar – Audio Book

January 21, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

(Note – Audio quality improves after 2 minutes)  An inspiring call to humility in Christian service and renewed compassion for those without Christ. This timeless classic by Horatius Bonar, Scottish Presbyterian, offers spiritual, heart-searching counsel to all believers, especially ministers of the gospel. Though written over a century ago, these words are as timely and convicting today as when first delivered. They represent a gripping challenge to put aside all that interferes with the ministry of the gospel to labor urgently and “be spent” for Christ.

Drawing from Owen, Baxter, McCheyne, Edwards, and others, Bonar summons us to faith, zeal, and love for lost souls. He warns of “the tragedy of a barren ministry” and gives special attention to the need for ministerial confession of sin, quoting extensively from an extraordinarily moving public confession by the ministers.

Bonar’s message is timeless, exposing our modern weakness in evangelism
We need men that will spend and be spent, that will labor and pray, that will watch and weep for souls!

70 nations gather to defy God.

January 15, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

70 nations were the families of Gen 10 after the Flood. They are the descendants of Noah and his three sons.

70 Disciples/Apostles correspond to the 70 Nations of the World.  Luke 10 v 1 after these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come.

After all, the 70 Elders Moses appointed also represent judges and rules over the mixed multitude Number 11 v 17 The LORD said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have they come to the tent of meeting that they may stand there with you?

These 70 Elders would eventually become the 70 that sat on the Sanhedrin in Yeshua’s day. – Seventy leaders of Israel were standing there with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan in the center. Each of them held an incense burner, from which a cloud of incense rose above their heads. Ezekiel 8 v 11

That during Sukkot (Feast of Nations) 70 bulls were sacrificed on behalf of the 70 Nations if you add up all of the bullocks offered over the seven days, they total seventy.  And if we go to the table of nations in Genesis, after the dispersion of the Tower of Babel, we find that humanity was divided into seventy basic families or nations.

Now the 70 nations of the world again gather to defy the God of Israel.

On Sunday, January 15th, 2017 Foreign Ministers and other diplomats from some 70 different countries have descended on Paris, with the intent to renew peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.  These were led by John Kerry Secretary of State for the United States and  French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Marc Ayrault.

The summit, which opened Sunday without leaders from either side of the conflict, is expected to urge the establishment of a Palestinian state. “We are here to reiterate strongly that the two-state solution is the only one possible,” said French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, in his opening remarks to top envoys at the conference.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to attend, decrying the conference as biased against Israel from the outset.

Just a week and half before the Security Council vote, U.K. Prime Minster May delivered a speech overflowing with praise and support for Israel. Addressing the Conservative Friends of Israel, the prime minister hailed the Jewish state as “a remarkable country” and “a beacon of tolerance.”

Ties with Jerusalem were “crucial,” she said, promising to raise the bilateral trade relationship to new heights and describing the Balfour Declaration as “one of the most important letters in history.” Britain broke with the 70 and chose not sign the resolutions passed in Paris.

Nevertheless, international pressure on Israel to carve up the Holy Land like a Thanksgiving turkey continues to build following President Obama’s May 2011 speech calling for Israel to withdraw to the 1967 borders.

Nearly every world leader — and certainly every American president since the Six Day War — has demanded Israel give up significant amounts of territory within Judea, Samaria, and the Golan Heights in order to create a sovereign Palestinian state and make peace with Syria, but never this much territory. The Obama plan would force Israel to give it all up, to divide Jerusalem, and return to indefensible borders.

The recent United Nations Security Council resolution 2334 was a radical reversal of 30 years of US support for Israel in the U.N.  This resolution declared Jewish housing in Judea, Samaria, and East Jerusalem to be illegal. Israel fears the outcome of the Paris conference will certainly be biased against them.

A two-state solution would call for Israel to relinquish territories conquered in the 1967 Six-Day War and subsequently, create a Palestinian State. This would include establishing a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem, thereby removing the Kotel (Western Wall) and the Temple Mount from Jewish control.

It is unclear whether the 800,000 Jews living over the 1949 Armistice Lines, comprising approximately 13 percent of Israel’s Jewish population, will be required to relocate.

I find it interesting that those 70 are now scheming to divide what God calls His – Joel 3:2, the Lord says: “I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; and they have divided up My land.”

The God of the wrong people

January 8, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

Most believers attend a congregation because or proximity to their home and/or because they have friends they fellowship with.  We overlook small differences in beliefs, as long as we all agree on major doctrines.

Soon we realize there is no perfect church. Yeshua has a strong word to 5 of the 7 churches of Revelation – Repent!  This Counsel is given to all the churches except Smyrna and Philadelphia.

So now that we know there is no perfect congregation it comes as no surprise that there are also no perfect leaders/pastors/teachers.

Despite our many differences, God will divide us all into only two groups.  He does not have 30,000 denominations or sects – He only has ONE people of God.

  • Wheat and Tares,
  • Saved and Unsaved,
  • Believers and Unbelievers.

So what makes these people the Saved or the Unsaved?

Does their church affiliation or correct denomination save them?  I think we agree on the fact that Yeshua is not returning only for the congregations of the Messianic/Hebrew Roots congregations, or is He?

What about the (Jewish only) Messianic Groups…. who trace their roots back to the earliest Hebrew Christian Church. The first identifiable congregation made up exclusively of Jews who had converted to Christianity was established in the United Kingdom in 1813. A group of 41 Jewish Christians established an association called “Beni Abraham.”  The first Hebrew Christian church was established in New York in 1885. Does being Jewish save them?

What about the Seventh Day Adventists/7th Day Church of God.… who trace their history back to the Millerites of the 1840’s? Are they Orthodox enough and will their Sabbath keeping and kosher diet save them?

What about the Seventh Day Baptists….who trace their history to their persecution under Cromwell for holding on to the Sabbath.  The first recorded SDB meeting was held at The Mill Yard Church in London in 1651. Stephen Mumford, a Seventh Day Baptist from England, arrived in Rhode Island in 1665 and is mentioned as an advocate for seventh-day Sabbath in many records of the time. The first SDB church in America was at Newport, Rhode Island, established December 1671. Will Yeshua include the faithful of that group?

What about the 30,000 other denominations/congregations….who trace their roots back to the Lutheran Reformation of 1517 and the various confessions that came from that? What saves them when their Beliefs and Practices do not include the observations and customs of Yeshua and the First Century Jewish believers? Diet, Calendar and Feasts are obvious differences.

  • Are they saved by their actions, or by their statement of beliefs?
  • What made them saints?
  • Or should the question be – Who made them saints?

Acts 10, known as “The Conversion of Cornelius,” could just as well be called “The Conversion of Peter” because of Peter’s real struggle to cross the threshold of a Gentile household. That act alone needed a vision from God given to two men.

An angel appears to Cornelius and he sent 2 servants and 1 soldier to find Peter. Meanwhile, Peter is having his own “Come to God” meeting as 3 times he is commanded to eat, that which was never food.  So he takes 6 other men with him and crosses a Gentile threshold.  Peter’s ethnic prejudices,  were not biblically based, but Jewish custom.

God converts and pours out His Spirit on an uncircumcised Roman and family who is an occupier of the Holy Land. This Gentile was forbidden to enter the Synagogue and the Temple (uncircumcised). Wrong language, Wrong race, Wrong job description, Wrong calendar and no religious observance as it related to Temple sacrifices and synagogue attendance.

So when Peter returns – the church holds a conference and they ask the question that you must decide here and now:

Does God have YOUR permission to call the wrong people and pour His mercy on them?

  • Rahab the Harlot.
  • Ruth the Moabitess.
  • Ninevites – That wicked city
  • Naham another Gentile soldier.
  • Samarian woman at the well – of questionable repute.
  • Zacchaeus – collaborator and thief.
  • Thief on the cross.

When you finally allow God to save and adopt those He will as His own….then you will be included in His coming revival and the outpouring of His mercy on all the wrong people.

Two incidents to ponder:

  • A  Torah observant Torah scholar – Nicodemus came with a question – How is one born again?
  • A Torah observant crowd chanted “Crucify Him” on their Passover Day.

Torah observance was not the saving characteristic there.

When I study the History of the Messianic/Hebrew Roots/ Sabbatarian churches I am ashamed.  We have done nothing to better our world. We cannot point to our participation in the 1st and 2nd     Great Awakenings, which started world missions, translated bibles and changed the moral climate of our nation.  Why were all the leaders and congregations Protestant?

  • Are we are not gifted the very Truth and light of YHVH’s eternal Torah – that gives Life?
  • Are we not commanded to share this Truth will all the world and make disciples of all nations?
  • Are we still deciding if God has our permission to save all the wrong people?
  • Are we inviting them all to share our Blessings?

Merkel, the last man standing.

January 7, 2017 By Richard A. Volunteer

Germany prepares to split with America. European politicians doubt Donald Trump will become a mature statesman.

Merkel is preparing for the worst. The New York Times called her “the last powerful defender of Europe and the trans-Atlantic alliance.” She is the last man defending a dying vision.  She stands for election a fourth time after 11 years in power.  She faces a difficult election and with 1.5 million new refugees in 2015, her popularity has been damaged by terrorism.

Each terror incident does pose electoral challenges for some of Europe’s leading pillars of unity like Merkel. Terror attacks in France and Germany do provide ammunition for right-wing leaders who want to go beyond simple bans on immigration from the Middle East. The National Front and their supporters want nothing less than a dissolution of the European Union and a return to pull-up-the-drawbridge nationalism for their individual nations.

A new rival to Merkel is Edmund Stoiber. He flatly rejects that Islam is a part of Germany. What makes him an interesting candidate is he appears to walk in the footsteps of his mentor, Franz Josef Strauss.  Stoiber called Strauss ‘the father of the people’s party’ and ‘the greatest political son of Bavaria.’” In the article, Stoiber wrote, “He was a Bavarian in the heart of Germany and European in vision. The modern people’s party was embodied in Franz Josef Strauss. … For me, he remains a teacher and fatherly friend” It was Strauss that wrote The Grand Design: a European solution to German unification. He led during Germany’s rise to power in Europe.

German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel called for Salafist mosques to be banned and their communities broken up.   “On this question, I am for zero tolerance,” the German official told Der Spiegel in an interview, commenting on the links between the Christmas market truck attacker and a Salafist preacher.

Gabriel was referring to Salafist preacher Abu Walaa, who was arrested in November along with others for recruiting people in Germany on behalf of the terrorist group Islamic State. Truck attack suspect Anis Amri, who killed 12 people at a Berlin Christmas market, is believed to have communicated with the cleric.   Salafism is growing fast in Germany, flourishing on grants and other forms of support from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations. Gabriel says Germany should fight radical forms of Islam on its own soil.  Gabriel leads to the Social Democrats (SPD), a coalition ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU). He is expected to run for chancellor this year against his current boss.

The cost of assimilating all those refugees and the strain on public services and welfare programs are beginning to mount up. Germans are also troubled at the cultural and religious influence of so many Muslims. Vladimir Putin is deeply troubling to Eastern Europeans.

The refugees are a burden on the country. They will move into apartments that are already in short supply in some cities. They will present a challenge to teachers because children who speak no German will enter the school system. A study by the Nuremberg-based Institute for Employment Research found that 13 percent of new arrivals in 2013 had a university degree, with almost one in four having at least a high school diploma.  Still, the largest group of newcomers, some 58 percent, has no occupational training whatsoever. If the country wants to avoid the mistakes made in the past, these people must quickly be given training. That will be one of the largest tasks in the coming years.

Europe has responded to the crisis with organised irresponsibility. Italy and Greece allow asylum-seekers to continue their journeys, despite the Dublin Regulation, which requires that refugees apply for asylum where they first enter the EU. It is a system that has allowed countries like Germany and France to ignore the true dimensions of the problem for years. As long as the refugees are headed to the Scandinavian countries in the North, they are not Germany’s present problem. The whole eurozone faces economic and financial collapse driven by ageing demographics and slow economic growth. Merkel has faced angry mobs calling her a traitor.  Right-wing parties in Denmark are seeking to clamp down on the number of people coming in, while Hungary is pushing ahead with plans to build a 13-foot-high barbed-wire fence along its border with Serbia, despite criticism from its European Union partners.

The Czech government has defended the right of the police to detain illegal migrants. Last week, its president, Milos Zeman, responded to a revolt among migrants held in a guarded facility by saying, “No one invited you here,” and, “If you don’t like it, leave.”

The Interior Ministry in Germany recorded 202 attacks on housing for asylum-seekers, including attempts to render shelters uninhabitable through arson, attacks with stones or other vandalism. A group called Courage Against the Right cites 48 attacks on individuals, based on local police records.

I wrote in an earlier article, we are entering the age of the strongmen. We will elect the same type of men, in conditions that are very similar to the 1930’s. Brexit, Trump, the swing to the right in European politics are all a logical outcome of the failed policies of globalism and failed attempts to export democracy to the Middle East.

The move to the Right will have huge consequences. The last time the world looked to the Right to solve their problems – the choices were Franco, Tito, Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin. We have learned nothing from history, so we will repeat it.

Our Leader cursed our nation.

December 31, 2016 By Richard A. Volunteer

President Obama’s refusal to veto an anti-Israel U.N. resolution was ranked as the most anti-Semitic incident of 2016 by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Gen 12 v 3 – ” I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

In the annual anti-Semitism report, the centre placed the Obama administration’s decision Friday to abstain on the UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements at the head of its list, the “Top 10 Worst Global Anti-Semitic/Anti-Israel Incidents.”

“The most stunning 2016 U.N. attack on Israel was led by President Obama when the U.S. abstained on a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel for settlement construction,” the centre said. “It reversed decades-long US policy of vetoing such diplomatic moves against the Jewish State.”

Also making the list was activity by the anti-Israel Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) movement as well as U.S. white nationalist leader Richard Spencer’s questioning whether Jews are “people or soulless golem” at a November gathering in Washington, D.C.

As a South African, I watched B.D.S. destroy our economy as the world isolated our government. Despite half the world’s gold reserves and the strongest military on the continent, our economy was crippled, our travel limited, and culturally we were isolated. I left South Africa in protest and was unable to return to my country for more than 15 years.

Now the two countries that fought so hard for the right of minorities and who share a similar constitution (U.S.A. and S.A.) lead the charge in anti-Semitic behavior. The 2001 World Conference against Racism (WCAR), also known as Durban I, was held at the Durban International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa, under UN auspices, in September 2001. Durban 2 followed in Switzerland. On the first day of the conference, Ahmadinejad, the only head of state to attend, made a speech condemning Israel as “totally racist”

He overlooked the fact that over 1 million Arabs (20% of the population) own land, live and vote in Israel, serve on their Supreme Court and in their Knesset and Cabinet, and play for their national and international sports teams.

In the past few years, scores of universities, pension funds, churches, and unions in the US, Europe, and elsewhere have supported BDS by boycotting Israeli goods and investments. The United Methodist Church’s $20 billion pension board, the biggest pension fund asset manager in the US, blacklisted the five largest Israeli banks. Norway’s $810 billion Government Pension Fund Global, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, blacklisted two Israeli companies over their involvement in settlement building in East Jerusalem.

The student councils of most of the University of California campuses have voted in favour of requests that the university system administrator divest from American companies making money from the settlements. The National Women’s Studies Association and other academic groups in the US have voted to boycott Israeli universities.

Two top Israeli officials have accused the Obama administration of orchestrating the resolution behind the scenes. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer said Wednesday that Israel would work to repeal the resolution even though such efforts can take years.

The true nature of the UN resolution is also hinted at by numerology. Resolution 2334 has a value. In gematria 2334 – is XXXX. In the rules of gematria, a repeated letter is for emphasis, turning XXXX into an emphatic XXX, which means ‘to betray’. By abstaining, US President Barack Obama betrayed his alliance with Israel, paving the way for the conference in Paris.

“Our goal would be to repeal it,” Mr. Dermer said “You know, the ‘Zionism is Racism’ resolution was sitting on the UN books for 15 or 16 years before we were able to repeal it.”

In its report, the Los Angeles-based centre said the resolution “identifies Jerusalem’s holiest sites, including the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, as ‘occupied Palestinian territory.’”

“It also urges U.N. members ‘to distinguish, in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967,’ effectively endorsing BDS,” said the report.“The reason why Jews are called Jews is because we are the people of Judea,” Mr. Dermer said. “So now the Jewish people are foreign occupiers of Judea? Judea all of a sudden has become occupied Palestinian territory? So this is absurd, and it has to be fought.”

The vote came as the latest of 20 anti-Israel U.N. resolutions approved in 2016. The U.N. General Assembly approved one resolution each against the countries of Syria, Iran, North Korea and Crimea in the same year.

Netanyahu will not meet with the foreign ministers of those countries and their ambassadors will not be received at Israel’s Foreign Ministry.  The officials said that business with the embassies of those countries that supported resolution 2334 — Britain, France, New Zealand, Russia, China, Japan, Ukraine, Angola, Egypt, Uruguay, Spain, Senegal — will be suspended.

When we elect a leadership that actively:

  • Promotes the widespread killing of our unborn,
  • Considers the bible a version of hate speech,
  • Undermines the marriage covenant,
  • Exalts the Muslim faith and favors it over Christianity,
  • Now undermines and curses the Jewish people.

For those that don’t believe in the God that faithfully keeps score…..Sleep well.

For those that do believe in the God that faithfully keeps score, who is the Righteous Judge, the Defender of the unborn and His people Israel…..we know there is trouble ahead.

Why study Church History?

December 31, 2016 By Richard A. Volunteer

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecc 1v 9)

It is impossible to appreciate that scripture without understanding.

We act as if we stumbled on a perfect set of Paleo-Hebrew Dead Sea scrolls and Yeshua led us into the desert like Rav Shaul to explain His Truth to us. Instead, He handed us 2000 years of His faithful working in the mess to bring us to this place. Gratitude should be our starting point.

Church History is made up of debates that have raged for 2000 years. A good understanding of that history will cast light on “new heresies” and explain so many traditions we take for granted despite them having no biblical support.

The sixteenth century alone provides a treasure of soul-stirring narratives. Think of Martin Luther’s bold and daring stand for the gospel against the destructive errors of Rome. Had it not been for that flawed anti-Semite – we would still be sitting in a Latin Mass with no access to a bible – let alone an English one. Consider the faithful witness of the English martyrs who died singing psalms as they were consumed by flames.

The story is messy and bloody and should stir our hearts to do great feats.

Church History is a reminder of God s faithfulness:

Like the psalmist, we must “recount all of God’s wonderful deeds” to remind ourselves that He will never leave us or forsake us (Ps. 9:1; Heb. 13:5).

All of Church History is His-Story. The stories of His faithfulness to the men like George Mueller who fed and clothed 20,000 orphans on prayer alone should encourage us to pray.

God provided us with perfect scriptures to perfectly equip us. The history of the Canon of (both old and new) testaments are in themselves amazing stories. God protected His word against all kinds of attacks.  Tyndale’s translation was the first English Bible to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, the first English one to take advantage of the printing press, and first of the new English Bibles of the Reformation. Tyndale died to give us that access.

Throughout time, God was there providing the tools for the next move of God in the hearts of men.

Church History protects us from error and clarifies previous errors:

Irish philosopher Edmund Burke wisely remarked that “those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” Indeed, without a basic knowledge of church history, individual Christians and churches are prone to repeat the same doctrinal errors and foolish mistakes of former days.

Learning about Adoptionism, Pelagianism, Arianism, Donatism, or Gnosticism will help you see some of those same heresies in the teachings of many modern preachers and teachers. Without studying Church history, these doctrines may seem new and creative.

A study of the revivals will reveal the Revivalism that cropped up where manipulation methods of Finney replaced the authentic work of the Holy Spirit in the pursuit of “converts” rather than conversion.

A study of the Welsh revival will reveal how emotionalism supplanted biblical doctrine. A great move of God was derailed and fell apart very quickly. Unstructured emotional meetings did not nurture or train mature believers or prepare saints for the long road ahead.

As Twain said “The less there is to justify a traditional custom, the harder it is to get rid of it” A study of history teaches us which traditions are suffocating and need to be avoided and which are so crucial that they must be preserved at all costs. Studying history will open our eyes to traditions we have always assumed were biblical.

Church History humbles us:

Our current generation with pride declares that we are the greatest generation of believers in the history of the world. Rev 3 v 17 – You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’  And you don’t realise that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. A look at history will shame us.

For instance, reading the letters of the Church Father, Ignatius of Antioch (35-108 AD), places our own efforts in perspective. The words of Ignatius to the church in Rome, about his own willingness to die as a martyr, should humble us in the light of the “easy-living” approach of many of today’s Christians: “I am writing to all the Churches and I enjoin all, that I am dying willingly for God’s sake, if only you do not prevent it. I beg you; do not do me an untimely kindness. Allow me to be eaten by the beasts, which are my way of reaching to God. I am God’s wheat, and I am to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts, so that I may become the pure bread of Christ.”

Queen Mary ascended the throne of England in 1553. In subsequent years, she had at least two hundred people put to death (often by fire) for their religious convictions. – Nicholas Ridley and Hugh Latimer were burned at the stake on October 16, 1555.  Latimer died much more quickly; as the flames quickly rose, Latimer encouraged Ridley, “Be of good comfort, Mr Ridley, and play the man! We shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace, in England, as I trust never shall be put out.”

The martyrdoms of Ridley, Latimer, and Thomas Cranmer are today commemorated by a Martyrs’ monument in Oxford. The faith they once died for can now be freely practised in the land.

Church History encourages us:

Hebrews 12 v 2 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

God filled the bible with biographies for many reasons….He wanted us to read them.

In 1563, Englishman John Foxe published his Acts and Monuments to give a universal history of God’s work at building His church. Often called Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, the history has become a Christian classic. There was a time when the Bible and Foxe’s work were the only two books many Christians ever read.

Hebrews 11 v 32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets,  who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,  quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection.  Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.  They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—  the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground.  These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised….

We put free history books on this site in the hope it would light a fire in your heart to cry “once more into the breach.” Now let us finish the task set before us.

D.N.A. proves the bible!

December 31, 2016 By Richard A. Volunteer

The advancements in DNA have been able to trace family relationships and prove parenthood beyond any doubt. Could this DNA research tell us if:

  • Jews were related to the Arabs and whether they shared a common family heritage?
  • Was there a Levite (Kohen) genetic marker that traced the descendants of Levi – the Priesthood.

“Jews and Arabs are all really children of Abraham,” says Harry Ostrer, M.D., Director of the Human Genetics Program at New York University School of Medicine. “And all have preserved their Middle Eastern genetic roots over 4,000 years,” he says.

The researchers analysed the Y chromosome, which is usually passed unchanged from father to son, of more than 1,000 men worldwide. Throughout human history, alterations have occurred in the sequence of chemical bases that make up the DNA, leaving variations that can be pinpointed with modern genetic techniques. Related populations carry the same specific variations. In this way, scientists can track descendants of large populations and determine their common ancestors.

Specific regions of the Y chromosome were analysed in 1,371 men from 29 worldwide populations, including Jews and non-Jews from the Middle East, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that Jewish men shared a common set of genetic signatures with non-Jews from the Middle East, including Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese. These signatures diverged significantly from non-Jewish men outside of this region. Consequently, Jews and Arabs share a common ancestor and are more closely related to one another than to non-Jews from other areas of the world. The study also revealed that despite the complex history of Jewish migration in the Diaspora (the time since 556 B.C. when Jews migrated out of Palestine), Jewish communities have generally not intermixed with non-Jewish populations. If they had, then Jewish men from different regions of the world would not share the same genetic signatures in their Y chromosome. It is possible to calculate from the divergence of the Y-chromosomes how much intermarriage there was over the last 2,000 years. The answer is a striking 0.5 percent per generation.

A similar study published in British science journal, Nature (January 2, 1997), asked that participants in Israel, England, and North America to contribute DNA material and identify whether they were Kohen or could identify their family background.

The results of the analysis of the Y chromosome markers of the Kohanim and non-Kohanim were indeed significant. According to Rabbi Yaakov Kleiman in his article “The DNA Chain of Tradition: The Discovery of the ‘Cohen Gene,’” one scientific study found that 98.5% of Cohens tested share the same genetic marker, which signifies descent from a common male ancestor. Astonishingly, Cohen progeny from both the Sephardic (Arab-Muslim world) and Ashkenazic Jewish (European) groups share the same sequence. Judging by the number of mutations that has occurred in the Cohen haplotype, scientists conclude that the Cohens descend from one man who lived approximately 3,300 years ago.(A haplotype is a group of genes within an organism that was inherited together from a single parent.)

In a second study, Dr. Skorecki and associates gathered more DNA samples and expanded their selection of Y chromosome markers. Solidifying their hypothesis of the Kohens’ common ancestor, they found that a particular array of six chromosomal markers were found in 97 of the 106 Kohens tested. This collection of markers has come to be known as the Cohen Modal Haplotype (CMH)–the standard genetic signature of the Jewish priestly family. The chances of these findings happening at random is greater than one in 10,000.

The finding of a common set of genetic markers in both Ashkenazi and Sefardi Kohanim worldwide clearly indicates an origin pre-dating the separate development of the two communities around 1000 C.E.

Professor Hammer was recently in Israel for the Jewish Genome Conference. He confirmed that his findings are consistent that over 80 percent of self-identified Kohanim have a common set of markers.

The findings exposed two common myths

  • The biblical assertion that the Samaritans were not proper Jews was unjustifiable and politically motivated. The Samaritan DNA shows that the lineage of this group is even more homogeneous and over a longer time than that of the Jews who returned from the Babylonian captivity. The fact that from Ezra’s time onwards Jewish teaching prohibited marriage between Jews and non-Jews – reinforced later by Christian rulers also forbidding it – contributes mightily to Jewish genetic identity.
  • The Christian Identity and  British Israelism (also called Anglo-Israelism) is a doctrine based on the hypothesis that people of Western European and Northern European descent are the direct lineal descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of the ancient Israelites. DNA proves this is a fairy tale.

Two books make for interesting reading:

Abraham’s Children: Race, Identity, and the DNA of the Chosen People by Jon Ernstein.

DNA and Tradition: The Genetic Link to the Ancient Hebrews by Rabbi Yaakov Kleiman.
