By the time He finished, it made sense.
The heaviness lifted and they began to hope again. This same sermon is given by 7 in Acts on 12 occasions.
7 people x 12 occasions in Acts preached this sermon…….
To hope their dreams weren’t delusions. To hope their pain had not been pointless. To hope that perhaps all these things did need to come to pass, as this man said.
There is new hope in the glory of the cross and the suffering with Jesus. – So now they begin to fellowship and invite Him to stay with them, and eat a meal.
The bread was plain, but enough for the evening meal and gladly shared. When they had lighted the olive oil wick and sat about the table, Cleopas nodded to their guest to return thanks.
But the Jesus, the guest, was breaking the bread! That was a job for the host! They let him take the lead now.
The teacher blessed the bread simply. He broke the loaf. He handed the pieces to them. Then they saw His hands. There, in the flame of the lamp! Those hands that held their bread! Raw, ragged, open wounds — the work of a centurion’s nail.
“They pierced my hands and my feet!”
“These are the wounds I received in the house of my friends!”
“They shall look on Him whom they have pierced!”
But when they looked, Jesus was gone. His chair sat empty. His half loaf lay uneaten on the table.
Before them the finger of the lamp flame pointed straight up without a flicker. Across the room the only door remained closed and latched against the night. But Jesus was gone.
God opened their eyes. Faith came not by seeing a miracle –
Ro 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
A) They did not see Jesus at work; he was disguised,
B) but by hearing….He revealed through Scripture. God revealed Himself in Scripture first
C) And the intimacy and fellowship with Jesus followed.
He broke the bread, and maybe then they saw the holes in His hands. And God lets them see, revealed in his glory!
The response:
Luke24:31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while He spake to us in the way, while He opened to us the scriptures?
Luke 24:33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them
So it was He! It was He all along! Hadn’t their hearts burned within them as He talked with them on the road, as He opened the Scriptures to them? And why had their hearts burned?
Because it was Him!
They exchanged their hope of Israel for a new hope.
We miss the meaning of our cross, we had hoped! Our hope of God saving our country and fixing our situation now…it must give way to Jesus being alive today and in charge. Let us pray God remove our blinders. Let us search the scriptures for Jesus being revealed today.
Embrace this cross. Embrace His cross, take it up again, and follow Him!
ROAD TO INVERNESS
We find our destiny
On the road we take away
Far from Seattle
To where Inverness lay
Left behind are all our losses
dead dreams on empty crosses
We walk away forever….
To where Love finds us.
To share the road beside us.
That Stranger with a point of view.
He does not scold our Running
For He knows our petty fear,
Yet questions our confusion
Of promises He made so very clear
He assures us “I will return!”
And shares our evening meal
Then leaves us these few words
“Kindle hope into a fire!”
“Fan faith into a flame!”
“Blazing Action, Now on fire!”
“Teach all this and use my name!”
So running back into our city
With a burning to proclaim
“He is alive!” “HE IS ALIVE!
And nothing will ever be the same!”
